Independant Reviews about The Avebury Lodge.

There are only two places to stay in Avebury, location of England's less
famous but infinitely more tourist friendly, stone circles, and by default we
ended up here. Of course, when staying at a small place (only two rooms)
such as this one, your host becomes particularly important, and The Lodge
has a host second to none in Andrew Blackall. Besides being up on his
stone circles in both the old and new worlds (and in his own backyard),
an exceptionally engaging and sly sense of humor should keep you
laughing as he takes you on a verbal tour of the area.

The rooms in the lovely Georgian house are spacious, quite a treat
versus the normal tight European quarters, and very comfortably furnished.
The location of the house is more than perfect, putting right in the middle
of the stone circle - just look out your window early in the morning as the
mists rise between the stones; spooky, isn't it? Breakfast is ample, and
Andrew whips up a great omelette. After breakfast, walk among the stones.
Or better yet, walk them at dusk, a much more atmospheric experience.

The Lodge is a great place to stay, your hosts make it even better.
(One word, if visiting from the U.S., the Blackalls would love for you
to bring american-style grape jelly and/or pretzels. Apparently it's
done better "across the pond.")

Next year I want to ..

Walk the Ridgeway
If you want to do something very British, take to the Ridgeway, 87 miles over rolling downs from the Avebury Ring stone circle, then east through unspoiled Chiltern beech woods to Ivinghoe Beacon, all the way following in the footsteps of prehistoric herdsmen and soldiers. Begin or end your journey at The Lodge (01672 539023), a Grade II-listed building owned by the National Trust and overlooking the Avebury henge. Rooms start from pounds 95 a night inc breakfast.

We came across the place by accident .... it's a wonderful Georgian Lodge
built around 1720. It is right in amongst the stones and has a wonderful
old world charm about it. The owner , Andrew, was really helpful and
pointed us towards a few things we simply wouldn't have known about
had he not shown us. Our room was wonderful, full of stunning pictures
some which looked 18th C and others that were simply so good we
wanted to buy them! Our breakfast was HUGE ... it was vegetarian and
the if that's what veggies eat for breakfast I might just join! The whole
place was non smoking and in very good repair .... Andrew has a really
wide knowledge and a truly sharp wit ... very amusing ... a nice guy.
Go and stay ... they even take credit cards!.

Rooms out of a film set! Breakfast to die for!
A host who made our visit .... views are worth a $1,000,000!
